YCAC Natural Abstractions Exhibit

From October 14 until November 12, 2011, the Yates County Arts Center will host its new exhibition “Natural Abstractions” presenting the work of Christine Barney, Connie Ehindero and Marc Freedman as well as the work of numerous local exhibiting artists.

Christine Barney: Born and raised near Corning, New York, her life has been anchored by glass for more than 30 years. Her first ten years were dedicated to learning technique as a glassblower. A two and a half year apprenticeship in Italy with Livio Seguso from 1984-1987 grounded her in the fundamentals of hot glassmaking. This led to a twenty year commitment to solid off hand sculpture, combining color and form at the furnace with cold worked surfaces that often radically altered the initial form. Seven years ago, looking to expand the scale of her work, she began to create sculptures by using the lost wax method of casting. This technique gives her great freedom and versatility in sculptural form and concept.

“Palettes of Keuka” Marks 5th year!

Hammondsport, N.Y. — Now in its fifth year, “Palettes of Keuka” – a creative fundraiser that puts colorful art on display for the summer all around Keuka Lake – is still going strong.

For the project, about 40 local artists painted murals on large wooden canvases in the shape of a palette. They are on display at shops around Hammondsport’s Village Square, and at restaurants and wineries all around the lake.

On Sept. 10, the palettes will be sold in a live auction in Village Square, with half the proceeds going to the artists and the other half going into a fund to support the arts in the Keuka Lake area.

What began on a whim five years ago has grown into a unique tradition, said “Palettes of Keuka” organizer Brett Steeves, a Hammondsport artist and gallery owner who participates himself.

“Every year, we think, ‘OK, are we done?’ And every year we’re surprised,” Steeves said. “We’re not even close to done. There’s too much excitement. This year, we didn’t even solicit for artists or sponsors. They all came in the door before we had a chance to go out and look. Everybody wants to be part of it.”

This year’s artists include Jaime Green, Lennolee Spraker, Andrea Thompson, Bruce Baxter, Rafael Feliciano, Marcia States, Sharon Wittier, Cindy Scheepsma, Angel Hess, Susan Wake, Jim Burns, Stefanie Weaver, Rich Musso, Barbara Radigan, Simon Sananas, Diana Bell, Dennis Howard, Eli Thomas, Susan Covert, Svetlana Baldwin, Courtney Wilcox, Andy Clark, Brian Buckley, Tambi Schweizer, Mike Moretti, Lori Beck, Colleen Yale, Bonnie Gustin, Linda Bailey, Morgan Vanderwall, Lucretia West, Beverly Falvey, Ron Dixon, Cejae Scotchmer, Verna Beck, Dave Walczak, Scott Graham, Dan Dugo, Suzy Bresser and Marc Rotman.

Maps showing the palette locations are available at the Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce, 47 Shethar Street.

Each palette has a “clue” in the form of a letter that folks can use to fill out a puzzle on the back of the map and be entered for prize drawings.

The Sept. 10 auction will feature a preview beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a live auction at 1 p.m.

The palette auction brought in $17,000 the inaugural year and has raised $12,000 to $14,000 annually since, Steeves said.

Half of that money goes into a fund that supports things like community theater productions and art programs.

This year, it will fund a weekend-long storytelling event on Sept. 23-24 in Hammondsport. Free and open to the public, it will feature storytellers at various locations throughout the village.

The students at Hammondsport Central School have also gotten involved in “Palettes of Keuka.”

About 40 students painted mini-palettes which are on display in the window of the Hammondsport Visitor Center. Also, 10 high school seniors painted full-size palettes which are hanging outside the school.

Last year was the first time the Hammondsport students took part, and this year, they began asking about the project months ahead of time, according to art teacher Gina Pfleegor, who painted a palette herself.

“It’s really been an exciting event for everyone and has been a wonderful artistic avenue for all kinds of young people, from those with a natural talent to others who are just beginning, to see how enriching the arts can be,” Pfleegor wrote in an email to The Leader.

Palettes of Keuka 2011

We're launching into our fifth year of the very successful Palettes of Keuka arts event! As the original summer-long event for the Keuka lake region, the Palettes of Keuka has inspired upwards of 40 artists each year to create artwork on giant size artist palettes. More importantly, we're excited to have accomplished our goal of bringing art to the forefront all around Keuka lake during the summer months. This event has also afforded us wonderful opportunities to provide funding for numerous art related activities and scholarships. Each year direct thousands of dollars in funding towards the support of the arts in our area!

This year we're on track to showcase 50 palettes at locations surrounding Keuka lake ! Beginning on July 1st the palettes will go on display. Maps, which include a fun puzzle which can be completed using clues from each palette will be available at each palette location as well as the Hammondsport Visitor's Center. Completed puzzles can be turned in at the Visitor's Center to be eligible for a drawing at the auction. Winners will be awarded prizes in the form of gift certificates good at local shops and wineries. In four short years we have created a Keuka lake tradition with our grand finale auction held in the village square in Hammondsport. This years auction is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th.

Artist Residency Programs Come to Sunny Point

Two unique Residency Programs have been designed this summer to offer both artists and students the opportunity to explore their craft, and to reflect and nurture their inner selves and creative talents. These programs are meant to attract and inspire self-motivated individuals who understand the importance of developing new work, honing their skills and spending meaningful time pursuing their interests while also embracing others who have a desire to learn about and experience the joys that come through art.

The Artist in Residency program offers the artist a free week’s stay in the White Cottage, full access to the studios in the Red Barn and grounds, and an opportunity to focus uninterrupted attention on the artist’s preferred talent. This gift includes the expectation that the artist will donate back to YCAC and/or community in the form of a lecture, demonstration or a piece of his or her art work. Travel and board not included.

The Host Residency offers, for a set fee, an artist the opportunity to provide education to students of the artist’s choosing with use of the White Cottage, studios in the Red Barn and grounds. Host a community open house at the end of your residency.

YCAC New Horizons Exhibit

It is an exciting time at YCAC. Much is happening to make us more visible and successful in fulfilling our mission to the area community. Soon we will be moving into our new, yet historic, building on Main Street with a unique and bigger gallery, an office, and a more suitable workshop space. Plans are in place for more innovative uses of our Sunny Point location. We are looking forward to a brilliant and creative new future.

As a celebration of YCAC’s new era, we are planning an exhibit called NEW HORIZONS that will focus on our artists’ recent inventive, groundbreaking, unusual, and experimental art. We challenge all our artists to exhibit their new work that falls in this category. Have you done something different from your usual work? Experimented with a new medium? Tried a new technique? Can you create something that depicts our theme? These pieces will be our featured art works. An area for your traditional work will also be available.

CALL FOR ART: New Horizons is an exhibit for all YCAC artists. We invite you to bring in your art works on Monday morning, April 11, 2011 for this moving exhibit. The reception for this show will be Friday, April 15 from 5-7 PM.

So if you accept this challenge, get your creative juices going and enjoy a time of experimental merriment.
