Corning makes national list of arts destinations

Corning, N.Y. — Artists and art lovers continue to love Corning.

Corning has again been named a top arts destination in the annual reader poll of AmericanStyle magazine.

Corning is ranked 11th in the poll for small cities among the top 25 identified as a top destination for collectors and travelers who love art galleries, museums and festivals. Corning has been recognized as a top destination for the past decade, ranked as high as third in 2006.

Corning Mayor Rich Negri displayed a plaque the city received from AmericanStyle at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“The fact that Corning is consistently in the top 25 and often in the top 10 is pretty significant,” said Peggy Coleman, director of the Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau.

The poll classified destinations as small, medium and large based on population. Readers selected Asheville, N.C., as their favorite small city, followed by Santa Fe, N.M., Saugatuck, Mich., and Key West, Fla.

“Look at who we’re in competition with,” Coleman said. “Here we are a very small city in rural New York state yet we’re a big arts location. It adds to the credibility that this is a cool spot and we should really check it out.”

Corning’s art community is dominated by its rich history of glass making and the world renowned Corning Museum of Glass which draws tens of thousands of visitors annually.

“I think we are very strong in other disciplines as well,” said Ginnie Lupi, executive director of the ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Often out-of-towners who visit CMoG eventually discover different aspects of Corning’s art community, Lupi said. Those include the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, the Orchestra of the Finger Lakes, the Corning-Painted Post Civic Music Association, 171 Cedar Arts, theater groups and the smaller art and glass galleries.

“I am still consistently surprised at the density of the arts endevour and the sheer number of artists in our community,” Lupi said. “There’s so much going on here artistically.”

Coleman said the public displays of art - such as “Artimus the Buffalo” and “The Critic” sculptures on downtown buildings – along with the frequency of festivals and events in Centerway Square help sustain the role of art in the city.

The success of the art community also adds greatly to the local economy.

“Art lovers know they can make a positive impact by buying from local galleries and local artists, so their dollars recycle in the community and support homegrown talent,” said Wendy Rosen, publisher of AmericanStyle.

Corning Fine Arts Features Amy Haney

Corning Fine Arts is proud to present the work of Amy Haney in the exhibition Maritime.

The exhibition continues through Thursday September 30, 2010

Artist Statement:
Making artworks based on sea life over the past year has been educational and continuously inspiring. I find a delicacy and strength in fragile earth collectibles. Like any Midwesterner, I have collected and marveled over the varieties of shells found at visited beaches. There is a duality of power and weakness in these creatures. Like a portrait of the sea, I’m researching, collecting and documenting its existence.

Artist Biography:
Amy Haney received her BFA from the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Both of her degrees are specifically in printmaking. She teaches Watercolor and Drawing at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Drawing and Printmaking at the Metropolitan Community College. She also works out of her studio at Hot Shops Art Center in downtown Omaha and is the Assistant Director at the Omaha Printmakers Guild in the same building.

Valley Folk Music

Shapiro and Shore
Shapiro and Shore take the stage on short notice at Valley Folk this weekend.

Date: Saturday, April 17, 2010
Time: 7:30 pm concert
Pre-concert jam: 6 pm until concert
Admission: $12 cash or checks at-the-door only; Children 14 and under free with adult; ½ price Students (Full-time College/High School) and Wheelchair Occupants.
Venue: Drake House Theater at 171 Cedar Arts, Corning, NY 14830 (Corner of Cedar and First Streets)

There will be a pre-concert jam session from 6 PM until concert time. Bring unplugged instruments and voices to make music in the gallery before the show while the rest of the volunteers set up the theater.

Phil Shapiro and Carrie Shore choose fascinating, energetic songs from the last couple of hundred years of American traditional folk song, and add newer songs written squarely in the folk tradition. With his fine finger-style guitar playing, Shapiro creates lively accompaniments to songs which tell good stories. Shore started out learning violin in the 4th grade but now plays traditional tunes and bluesy, slinky improvisations on the instrumental breaks. Together, they offer a delightful program of American folk music, old and new. It makes a nice change to a performing circuit sometimes dominated by singer-songwriters to have some real, old fashioned folk singers among us, to help us keep the good old songs alive.

Shapiro learns songs from the cream of the folk musician crop. While has been entertaining folk audiences throughout New York State and beyond, for over 40 years, he is, however, best known as the host of WVBR's Bound for Glory radio show. It is North America's longest-running live folk concert broadcast, on Sunday nights, Ithaca, N.Y., since 1967, and webcast at wvbr.com.

That's where he hears some of the best music on the folk circuit. Shore has played more kinds of music in less time than practically anyone. Her fiddling is flexible and very exciting to hear. They both want the audience to be involved in the show, so come to listen and come to sing with us. This is community in action.

are seeking artists for the 2010 "Palettes of Keuka". Now in its 4th year this event has been well received drawing terrific response from local residents and tourists alike. The event provides a venue for experiencing Art both inside and out at various locations in Hammondsport and surrounding Keuka lake. Artists are provided with large "Artist Palette" shaped backgrounds and encouraged to paint what they will, (which opens the door to a diverse and interesting assemblage of subject matter).

This event is aimed at two goals specifically.

The map, that is provided at each palette location as well as in the Hammondsport visitor's center, also features a puzzle which can be solved using clues found at each palette location. Completed puzzles can then be entered into a drawing for prizes.

Secondly, Money's raised from the sale of these palettes at the end of the summer are used to support and encourage the arts in Hammondsport and the surrounding region. The art fund is administered by the Hammondsport chamber of commerce and is used for such things as purchasing supplies for summer youth art programs and sponsoring event art poster competitions, etc.
